MATCH 1                  LEGENDS vs. THE LIMEHEADS  June 17, 2002

Sharing the angst of the Irish folks over the performance of Ireland in the World Cup, the Legends drove through the rainy roads of western Ireland to Galway to the aptly named Flatlanes.  Scott Iacono, with his vast experience driving on the left hand side of the road drove the van carrying all the Legends from the Shannon Airport.  It was a harrowing ride so much so that Ms. Weinberger, sitting on the right hand side of the car begged Scott on numerous occasions to slow down.  The Conciliator, normally not known to be bashful, was without words and seemed to be praying.

After what seemed like a 4 hour drive, it was actually 135 minutes, we disembarked and headed for the lanes where The Limeheads were waiting.  The Captain of the Legends Ireland Team suggested a 15 minute period of stretching following by a few Guinness beers to relieve the tenseness from the ride.  The long day proved worth the effort and the terror because the Legends won four points.

It’s worth nothing that the Limeheads can be described as – at best – a motley crew.  The team was comprised of two sheepherders (Shepards), a factory worker, domestic engineer (all men) and two women, one was an egg feeler and the other ran a “kennel” for goats.  The star of the team was the Captain, but only because his terrible previous performance gave him an average of 85 so his three game total of 135 (near the low for the team) coupled with his handicap (bowling wise) made a big difference.  Scott’s bowling was slightly better than his driving and Joann’s bowling score was higher than her husband’s without considering the handicap.  Klaus “The Conciliator” did an excellent job and his leather pants distracted the Limeheads especially the “egg feeler” who couldn’t keep his eyes of him.  Ms. Weinberger performed well setting in for “her man”.  The high single game was bowled by Mr. Tennis who rolled an astounding 237, but his series (3 games) was only 496.  He was pleased that he got into rhythm in the final game.

The trip back to the Shannon Airport was much more relaxing – Joann demanded the keys (and that Scott sit in the back of the van).  The Captain, The Conciliator and Scott having a designated driver tested the waters turned into beer on the way back.  All in all the first match was a success and we found ourselves wishing we had more time to spend in Ireland.  Since we had a few hours before flying back to England, Klaus and Bernhard treated us all to dinner and drinks – a decided pleasure on a day that ended on a sunny note.

Match 2 is scheduled for June 28th in Chickester, England about 45 minutes from London.  Joann as Captain of the Legends for the Match has lined up a team that call themselves Roadkill; they are taxi drivers and truck drivers.  (Hearing this it was suggested that Scott could fit right in with them.)  The Legends for Match 2 are the Iacono’s, Mister Leo, Doctor ???, Biker (who will be in the area on an Assignment) and Chocolate Chippy who will be in the area visiting HQ.

Because of the many teams and different schedules the rankings are posted after all teams have completed 6, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 matches.
